Its entire surface is covered in concentric golden butas — this is the Herati, the oldest form of the kelaghayi, named for the city of Herat from which the 'smoking shrub' that yields its yellow dye was once brought. Gold-orange is the true colour of the Herati, and this dense ornamentation reads like a depiction of paradise — the summit of the maker's art. Its name comes from the Herati composition and the golden (qızıl) hue.
