Violet sits in the alvan register, the living colour a young woman is expected to wear. Two ivy bands — sarmaşıq, normally a border — have been turned inward and run the full height of the cloth, with butas and dot-rosettes settling into the space they leave. Its name comes from the violet (bənövşə) and from those ivy bands.
